Tom Baker is an English actor, best known for playing the fourth incarnation of The Doctor in the legendary TV series Doctor Who. Tom played this role between 1974 and 1981. He has also played the role of narrator for the BBC hit comedy show, Little Britain.
Tom Baker was born in Liverpool in 1934 and is the eldest of three children. At 15, he decided to join a religious order, the De la Mennais Brothers originating from Ploërmel in Brittany in France, and he devoted himself to the monastic way of living. At the age of 21 he decided this was no longer the way for him and left. Tom wrote about his time in the monastery in his autobiography “Who on Earth is Tom Baker?”
Before embarking on an acting career, Tom Baker spent 2 years in the army medical corps. Taking part in the medical corps’ amateur dramatics at Christmas helped Tom to discover his talent to make people laugh.
Tom's first acting job was as the bear in The Winter’s Tale at the Cambridge Theatre, the Edinburgh Festival and Venice. He also played many different parts in repertory theatres in the north of England including, The Strongbox, Hay Fever, Arden of Faversham and Boat in the Backyard.
Tom also starred in several productions at the National Theatre starring amongst other actors such as Sir Anthony Hopkins, Paul Schofield, Joan Plowright and Derek Jacobi.
After being cast in Doctor Who, Tom Baker’s life had dramatically changed and was filled with work he loved. He found himself busy with rehearsals, recordings in television and film studios, on an extraordinary range of locations, from caves to nuclear power stations, from Cambridge to Paris. He was attending script meetings, costume fittings, interviews and promotions. Tom was in demand for voiceovers and commentaries and appearances on other programmes.
