When you hire an agency or designer to design your website, it is important to remember to give them some direction in order to fulfil your needs. We have put together a few suggestions on what you should consider when making decisions about website design.
What is your website for?
The first part of your plan should be to identify what you want from your website. For instance, for businesses the purpose of your site may be to sell products or services where as for authors and artists your site would be dedicated to promoting yourself and your work. It is essential to create a direct message to those you would like to engage.
Content is just as important
The design of your website is of course important, but the content is just as significant and works with the design, keeping the website active. If you have a clear message the designer can help you say it beautifully. The content should be clear and readable allowing it to connect with users.
Standing out
Do your research and have a look at your competitors and peers. This will enable you to identify where you fit in and give you ideas on how you can stand out. It is important to keep an eye on aspects that are commonly used across all websites as these are often what make good web practice. For example, examine how menus and navigation are set up on a range of sites.
Research
This ties in with the last point. When communicating to the designer what you want, have a look around, use your competitor’s sites to depict the features that you like. Providing a visual representation of what you like is also helpful for the design team. It is important to look into the colours, layout, hierarchy and overall feel you want.
Colour
Whether you are an individual, small business, or large corporation, you need to remember that colour scheme is a significant aspect within web design. You don’t need to use vibrant palettes to create an effective web design, it’s more useful to pick a moderate number of colours and use them efficiently, so users see what is more important immediately.
