Dementia UK- Improving Usability

The Challenge

This web project started off as a solution to some familiar digital problems; The organisation had an old, hard to use proprietary CMS with an associated high cost of ownership, a need for a more modern design and layout, and a need for a site structure better suited to fundraising, which would help them raise the funds they need to further their cause.  They were after a new digital solution which would provide value and improved usability both for their external partners and supporters, and for their internal team.

The Solution

We worked in partnership with the client to identify a tangible and effective route to improving the site from a number of angles:

Firstly, we helped clarify how they could provide better outcomes for their online users by making the content structure more informative, engaging and easy to use.

Secondly, we gave them the tools to take full ownership of their content.  We set up a flexible and attractive admin area, ensuring that the administration was as simple and effective as possible.  This, along with an improved content structure, has helped them be in full control of their content and easily create high quality content that engages their users.

Thirdly, we helped them understand how to make best use of their available budget, building business cases for each technical output so that they knew why and how their money and time was being spent. This was crucial to ensure the quickest route to delivery, whilst importantly making sure that they ended up with a site that was not only great now, but continues to add value to their online proposition going forward.

Lastly, we took great care to build the site in such a way that they could focus their future income in areas that delivered real value, rather than on simple maintenance and content update tasks. By doing this we have helped to decrease the cost of ownership whilst greatly improving the potential return on investment.

The new website was built in WordPress.  It is user friendly for both the site audience and the admin team.  It features a new design, flexible content templates allowing greater freedom in content creation and updates, and an improved site structure optimised for fundraising.  The new site is responsive and great care was taken when designing the mobile version to ensure that the ‘donate’ call to action is in a prominent location within the top navigation and appears above the fold.  The site includes a search option, newsletter sign up and an active ‘latest news’ section.

The Results

  • Page views have increased by 40%
  • Sessions have increased by 19%
  • The average session duration has increased by 18%
  • Bounce rate has decreased by 9%
  • Website load time has improved from 7.3 to 2.1 seconds (this is also a key factor in Google page ranking)
