Dementia UK – Improving Usability

The Challenge

Dementia UK had some familiar digital challenges and problems. The charity had an old, hard-to-use proprietary CMS with an associated high cost of ownership. They needed a more modern design and layout and wanted a site that was better suited to fundraising and which could help them raise much-needed funds to further their work. They also needed improved value and usability for external partners, supporters, and the internal team.

The Solution

We worked in partnership with Dementia UK to identify a tangible and effective route to improving the site from a number of angles. Firstly, we helped clarify how they could provide better outcomes for their online users by making the content structure more informative, engaging and easy to use.

Secondly, we gave them the tools to take full ownership of their content.  We set up a flexible and attractive admin area, ensuring that the administration was as simple and effective as possible. This, along with an improved content structure, has helped them to be in full control and easily create high-quality content that engages their users.

Thirdly, we helped them understand how to make best use of their available budget, building business cases for each technical output so that they knew why and how their time and money was being spent. This was crucial to ensure the quickest route to delivery, whilst also making sure that they ended up with a site that would add value going forward.

Lastly, we took great care to build the site in such a way that they could focus their future income in areas that delivered real value, rather than on simple maintenance and content update tasks. By doing this we have helped to decrease the cost of ownership whilst greatly improving the potential return on investment.

The new website was built in WordPress. It is user friendly for both the site audience and the admin team. It features a new design, flexible content templates allowing greater freedom in content creation, and a site structure optimised for fundraising. The new site is responsive with the ‘donate’ call to action still featuring in a prominent position on mobile and tablet devices. The site includes a search option, newsletter sign-up and an active ‘latest news’ section.
